Immediate Denture Post-Op Instructions

In order to reduce the risk for potential post-operative complications and to assist healing, we request that you consider the following post-surgical guidelines.

Discomfort:

It is important to realize that some discomfort is expected aſter this type of dental surgery since multiple teeth are extracted with reshaping of the bone and gums. Bone graſts may also be placed and sutures may be placed to
re-approximate the soſt tissue.

Prescription:

Please follow the directions given for prescriptions from this office. Although this process removes infected and structurally
unsound teeth, any associated infection in the surrounding tissues may be controlled with the use of antibiotics.
Anti-inflamatory medications such as ibuprofen work well either alone or in conjunction with narcotic prescription pain
medications in controlling post-operative discomfort.

Dentures:

Immediate dentures oſten feel bulky when first placed since they must allow space for post-op swelling and it takes time to adjust to a prosthesis. As healing continues, the swelling dissipates and the bone / gums remodel. Soſt tissue conditioners or liners will be placed by your denturist/dentist to improve fit and comfort.

After the surgery:

Please do NOT remove your denture until your follow-up appointment the next day with yout dentist/denturist. Use of ice packs (15 minutes on and 15 minutes off the face for 2 to 3 hours) helps in controlling swelling and bleeding

Avoid:

— Smoking for at least 48 hours after dental surgery
— Avoid alcohol consumption for at least 48 hours and or until medications with narcotics are stopped aſter dental surgery
— Use of straws, rinsing the mouth or spitting for at least 24 hours aſter dental surgery
— Hard, crunchy or fibrous foods for at least 24 hours aſter dental surgery
— Exercise while taking narcotic pain medications

Your Denture:

Please remember that immediate complete dentures are made without the ability to try the prosthesis in the mouth. Sometimes the appearance, bite or fit can be quite different in your mouth from the plaster models. These concerns are important and will be corrected by your denturist for the final dentures.

Please feel free to ask any questions you might have regarding your treatment. Do not hesitate to contact the office if we can be of assistance during your recovery period. If you call aſter hours please leave your name and a phone number on the answering machine so we may attend to your call.
